What are two broken-hearted women to do? Run away, of course. [Amanda] goes on the Internet looking for a quick getaway and immediately finds a Web site for home exchanges. That perfect little English cottage she spots looks like the ideal place to stay. The next day, [Iris] and Amanda are on flights to stay in each other's homes -- and lives -- for two weeks. It's culture shock for both of them. The difference is that Iris basks in the warm Los Angeles glow, while Amanda gives a cold shoulder to the idyllic English landscape.
Iris meets Miles (Black), a film composer who works with Amanda's ex-boyfriend. Like Iris, Miles is in a bad relationship that he fails to see for what it is (love is blind, after all). In the sweetest relationship in the movie, Iris also befriends a neighbor named Arthur (the wonderful Eli Wallach), who we learn is an award- winning screenwriter from Hollywood's Golden Era with plenty of wisdom to share.
